GeForce 9800GTX+

8/10/2009

In late 2009 I started looking around for a new video card. In that research I decided that the old AGP bus is just too old to keep spending money on. That meant I would have to build a new machine because all the computers I had here were AGP. So I started looking around at motherboards that had PCIe slots in them. The more I researched the more I realized that I needed more than one PCIe slot. Multiple video cards were the way to go to get the most points per day for my folding project. Folding? You ask. Well follow the link and that will explain it.

Since my folding project needs a lot of video card power and not a lot of CPU horsepower I looked for something that could accomodate two cards and yet not break the bank. I settled on a MSI P7n SLI motherboard with 3 PCIe slots. In her I put 4 gigs of ram and an E5300 Dual Core running at 2.6ghz. Of course I put in a PC Power and Cooling 750w sli power supply. I have always sworn by the PC Power and Cooling supplies and basically that is all I run here.

It happened that there were a few sales going on at the time and I purchased two XFX GeForce 9800GTX+'s and installed them. It is now a year later and they have run flawlessly. Well almost. I had always run them with the case open and never really worried about the heat. I have recently moved that machine from being a dedicated folder over in the corner to my main machine that I am typing this on. In doing so I decided to put the side back on the case. I then found I had way too much heat inside and decided to add some fans to the case. Well this will all be shown in the pictures I will include below. In any case that machine has run over a year and now I am looking into upgrading the video cards. See my next article on the new Asus ENGTX460 cards.

Specs:

Dual Geforce 9800GTX+'s produce approximately 12,000 ppd for folding.
